Carpet Installation and Maintenance

Installation

Though carpet tiles are easier to install than wall-to-wall carpet, you may need to follow certain steps to ensure a smooth, clean, and beautiful installation. Along with the necessary tools and the correct amount of tiles and adhesive or tile glue, take note of the following:

1. Prep the area: The subfloor must be clean, dry, and debris-free before installation. Any uneven areas or cracks should be filled and leveled. Order your tiles by dividing the square footage of the room by the measurement of one tile to know how many tiles are needed then add 10% for future repairs.

2. Mark and start at the center of the room: Starting from the center of your space is the best way to ensure consistent installation once you reach the walls. Mark the center by measuring an equal distance from both ends of the room. Lay out your carpet tiles without adhesives until you reach your walls, considering the pattern you want your flooring to have and the proper spacing of the room. Some adjustments of the center point and the tiles may be needed to ensure spaces near walls can fill at least half a tile.

3. Place the tiles: Once you’re satisfied with the placement of your tiles, start installing your tiles. With peel-and-stick carpet tiles, after removing the plastic or paper film covering the adhesive, gently place the tile on the floor and adjust, then press the tile in place.

With carpet tiles that need adhesive, ensure you spread enough adhesive on the floor for two to three tiles at a time. Place the tile lightly on the adhesive and ensure you don’t get any on the carpeted side. Once you’re satisfied with its placement, press the tile in place.

4. Cut tiles along walls: Once you’ve placed most of the tiles in place, cut tiles to fill in gaps between the tiles and the walls. Measure the gap and cut the tiles accordingly, and install them as you did with the previous tiles.

5. Secure tiles in place: Use a carpet roller to ensure the tiles are firmly in place.

Maintenance

Once you’ve installed your tiles, follow these tips to maintain their appearance and performance for years:

• Vacuum regularly, especially in high-traffic areas.

• Use protective mats or runners in high-traffic areas.

• Clean up spills immediately.

• Use spot cleaners for stubborn stains.

• Deep-clean carpet every 8–12 months.

• Use plywood when moving furniture on the tiles.
