Definition of Expansion Space
An expansion space is the gap around the edge of a room that occurs when you install a floating floor. The gap allows for the natural expansion and contraction of flooring material due to environmental changes and enhances the longevity and performance of flooring material.
A few things contractors must remember about the expansion space when installing a floor include:
- The amount of space left is dependent on the flooring material
- The expansion gap must be measured and calculated accurately
- The expansion gap must be consistent around the entire perimeter of a room
