Definition of Wear Layer

The wear layer sits between the top coat and the decorative layer of various flooring materials, including vinyl. The wear layer provides protection to the other layers of flooring and is usually made of a urethane coating.

The wear layer enhances a floor's durability, scratch, and stain resistance. The thicker the wear layer, the more durable flooring. For instance, 12 mil to 20 mil, would be best for a commercial application.
