Cove Base (with Toe)
Johnsonite, a Tarkett company, has years of proven performance for wall protection. Baseboard molding is manufactured from top-quality materials with unmatched durability for commercial applications. Tarkett wall base or Johnsonite wall base resists scuffing, fading, and cracking.
Coved rubber and vinyl cove base is one of the most popular options for wall base. Cove baseboard moldings are designed to both protect the wall and make for a sanitary environment. The trim of the Johnsonite wall base ensures any messes or spills fall off the foot and away from the wall, allowing these elements to settle in a manner that can easily be cleaned.
4" Wall Base
Typically most retail areas, schools, offices, and public buildings will install a 4-inch base. The 4.5-inch Johnsonite wall base is often used if you are trying to cover up a previous 4-inch installation, and the extra 1/2 inch allows for the new base to cover any damage that occurs during the removal process.
2.5" Wall Base
The 2 1/2 Johnsonite wall base is great for residential or areas that get less foot traffic, and the base is more intended for style and a slight addition to wall protection. Some bathrooms require a 6-inch cove base for sanitary purposes.
Straight Base (Toeless)
Johnsonite wall base without a toe or toeless rubber/vinyl moldings is commonly used in hotels and large luxury spaces that demand a more cut and clean look. A straight wall base is also more commonly installed over the carpet than vinyl flooring, which almost always would be used in coordination with a cove base.
Rubber vs. Vinyl Wall Base
People often wonder what the difference is between Johnsonite wall base in rubber and vinyl. Vinyl and rubber wall bases are different with every brand, but a rubber Johnsonite wall base is better for industrial and heavy commercial spaces. On the flip side, a Johnsonite vinyl wall base is a better solution for light commercial or residential applications. There is also a rubber-vinyl blend that can be found with brands such as the Roppe 700 Series that has properties of both materials, making it an affordable yet durable option.
Johnsonite wall base in rubber and vinyl can be used in commercial spaces, but we recommend rubber if it’s within your budget. A rubber Johnsonite wall base can be more pliable/flexible if you need to bend around a wall. A vinyl Johnsonite wall base is still flexible, but it may require you to cut through the material or score the back of the vinyl baseboard to allow for proper bending to curve around a wall or on the inside angle of the wall of your whole space.
Johnsonite rubber wall base has also been known to handle temperature changes well, as it’s less likely to shrink or crack, being the more flexible option. Vinyl Johnsonite wall base may experience shrinkage or cracking if not installed in a climate-controlled room.
Tarkett / Johnsonite Wall Base Colors
Johnsonite wall base has four color pallets: A, B, C, and D. The color chart for Johnsonite wall base A and B are for more common colors that should typically be in stock. Johnsonite wall base C and D color charts have more specialty colors that would either be in stock at the Ohio mill or have to be produced in about four weeks.
Some productions for Johnsonite wall base can take longer or require a minimum of 1,000 linear feet.
