Vinyl Flooring
Commercial vinyl flooring is high-grade floor covering designed to withstand heavy-foot-traffic areas. Armstrong static dissipative tiles (SDT), luxury vinyl tiles (LVT), commercial vinyl composite tiles (VCT tile), vinyl wood plank flooring, and resilient vinyl sheet flooring are great options for almost any commercial or industrial application.
Vinyl Flooring for High-Traffic Spaces
VCT and vinyl wood flooring are commonly used in public spaces such as retail stores, business offices, or even schools and classrooms because of their dimensional stability.
Vinyl wood floors are often chosen for being inexpensive, easy to maintain, and durable. Resilient vinyl tiles, wood planks, and sheet vinyl materials are the best flooring for high-traffic areas. Commercial luxury vinyl flooring is more resistant to stains, scratches, and other common surface wear compared to natural flooring like wood or stone, which are less forgiving.
Standard Vinyl Floor Tile Sizes
Standard vinyl floor tiles come in 12" x 12" squares and are cut to a 1/8" thickness. Most cartons of vinyl floor tiles contain 45 square feet per box. Each box of commercial vinyl flooring tile weighs approximately 63 pounds, so expect to pay a little more for direct shipping. In addition, vinyl tiles also now come in 16" x 16" (Azrock Cortina Grande) and 12" x 24" (Armstrong Raffia) sizes.
Vinyl Composition Tile Costs
The price of cheap commercial flooring ranges from $0.99 to several dollars per square foot, depending on the brand and the type of vinyl flooring for sale. For example, premium vinyl floor tile or slip-resistant tiles generally cost $2–$4 per square foot. Premium or luxury vinyl tile flooring is often more expensive because of how it’s made and its unique patterns.
Luxury vinyl tile is an industrial vinyl flooring option that can withstand constant scuffing and pressure versus typical vinyl flooring products because of its multilayer assembly. Slip-resistant tiles have a special top surface that prevents slippage—great for areas prone to wet messes and spills, where customers or employees could slip and fall.
Anti-static vinyl flooring (static dissipative tiles or SDT) is commonly used in electric-sensitive areas. This tile is designed to reduce any potential static that could damage electronics. Static dissipative tile ranges from $5–$6 per square foot.
Cheap Commercial Flooring Ideas
There are plenty of luxury vinyl flooring options, but glue-down VCT (vinyl composite tile) is still the least expensive option for commercial-grade resilient flooring installation. If you don’t want to sacrifice quality, then VCT flooring is the way to go. The simple composite vinyl tiles have been around for decades and have proven to be tile that lasts.
Getting the Proper Amount of Vinyl Flooring
Ordering the correct amount of vinyl flooring is a crucial step in your project that deserves serious consideration. Look for expert guidelines to help you determine how much vinyl flooring they need for a project. Ordering too much could result in unnecessary waste. Ordering too little can be a nightmare and may jeopardize the whole job. Below we will discuss how to calculate the amount of vinyl flooring you will need and how much you should order.
Measuring
Measuring your space is the first step to getting the right amount of vinyl flooring. VCTs are typically sold in a box of 12"x 12" squares. Some styles are also available in 16"x 16" or 12"x 24". When you measure your space, be sure to measure everywhere that you intend to cover. Many people forget to measure closets or other spaces that are easily forgotten.
Vinyl flooring is also available in sheets and planks. Vinyl sheets come in various sizes. Vinyl plank flooring use vinyl planks: long pieces of flooring that fit in tight against each other.
It is important to research the type of floor you want and whether it is available in sheets, tiles, or planks. This will affect how much vinyl flooring you will need.
Why Order Extra Flooring?
Once you have made your measurements, you now know exactly how many square feet you will need to cover your space. However, this does not account for possible cutting and measuring mistakes or other factors that may affect the amount of vinyl flooring you’ll need.
Throughout the project, you will make mistakes. Even seasoned professionals will most likely make a few mistakes. Ordering excess flooring allows you to fix the mistake and move on easily. If you run out of sheet vinyl or vinyl planks, you will probably suffer delays in the installation. Additionally, you run the risk of not being able to find the correct match.
Having additional luxury vinyl plank or vinyl tile flooring on hand is also necessary for pattern matching, if you choose a pattern. You may find that a piece of the flooring cuts off in the middle of a pattern during installation. Having additional flooring allows you to match the pattern and maintain the floor’s aesthetics.
How Much Extra Flooring Should You Order?
Most experts agree that 10% more than the square footage of your space should be enough. Some simply order 5% more.
However, how much extra vinyl flooring you order mostly depends on your choice, skill level, and confidence. Some people like having way more than they need to be safe. Others have more cavalier attitudes and feel they do not need to waste money and material on extra flooring.
When it comes to flooring, it’s better to be safe than sorry. A seasoned professional installer may be able to limit their mistakes, but if you are a DIYer, and a beginner at that, consider getting more than a 5% extra vinyl plank or sheet flooring coverage.
Proper Storage
Even waterproof vinyl flooring can be sensitive. If you are not going to install it or have it installed immediately, then you must know the proper storage methods.
Climate
Sheet vinyl or vinyl plank flooring should be kept indoors in a climate-controlled environment. Excess heat or cold can damage the material and the adhesive. This can cause them to be uneven upon installation.
Flat Surface
Vinyl plank and sheet vinyl flooring must be stored on flat ground. If they are left uneven for an extended period, they will become warped, bent, or damaged. This will make proper installation difficult or impossible.
How to Install Vinyl Flooring
Installing vinyl flooring is fairly simple, especially on concrete floors, but it does require some prepping and care.
Lay the vinyl tile flooring in position.
Pull back half of the flooring to reveal subfloor.
Using a notched steel trowel, apply recommended adhesive to the subfloor.
Allow the adhesive to sit according to open-time instructions.
Carefully lay vinyl tiles back in place and press firmly.
Clean up any residual adhesive left behind and keep foot traffic to a minimum for 24 hours so the adhesive has time to dry and bond.
Vinyl floors are water-resistant, scratch-proof, and easy to install on most subfloors. They require proper installation and low maintenance, so they last for years. Do your research and follow these guidelines to ensure you will be satisfied with your flooring choice for years.
Durable Vinyl Flooring
Whether you are looking for cheap VCT flooring or static dissipative vinyl flooring, we recommendArmstrong vinyl flooring as the top-rated commercial vinyl flooring manufacturer. Armstrong is known for their low-cost, high-quality resilient vinyl floors.
Commercial-grade vinyl flooring costs slightly because of the way they are manufactured—they last a long time, require low maintenance, and can withstand heavy foot traffic.
